Today, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is giving the three ousted Iowa Supreme Court Justices their Profile in Courage Award “in recognition of the political courage and judicial independence each demonstrated” by their ruling on marriage in 2009.

It’s a bit ironic that they are receiving a “Courage Award”. The “Cowardice Award” would be more appropriate. They knew if they sent it back to the legislature and gave their true opinion to the people – the people would have voted like California and 27 other states, defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

Instead of doing what was right they took the path of cowardice. At that same point in time the State of Iowa had a matching Governor and poof… injustice became law.

The Associated Press says, “The justices were ‘pushed off the bench’”. Pushed off the bench? Over one-half million people voted to fire three judges. Had they all been up for the retention election I believe We The People of Iowa would have fired all seven of them. Pushed off? No, Iowans who believe in the sanctity of marriage united in one voice to say, as Donald Trump puts it, “You’re fired”!

California passed proposition 8 with the majority of people in California voting that marriage is between one-man and one-woman. Then a judge struck it down.

In April 2010 the Iowa Supreme Court struck down the 1998 Defense of Marriage Act and declared same sex marriage as legal in our state. Over 160 years of Iowa law was thrown out the window. Not by a vote of the people and not by the legislature but by
seven rogue Supreme Court Justices.

While I support traditional marriage, that is not the real issue. The real issue for me is judges feeling so “supreme” that they can change laws. If the courts can change our laws concerning marriage, all Iowans’ rights are in jeopardy.

What happens if the courts decide to redefine property rights, parental rights or our First and Second Amendment rights? The truth is, the decision would have never been made through the legislature and it should not have happened through the courts.

Our legislators wisely gave us a checks and balances system. That check and balance here in Iowa is called a “retention election”. In 2010, We The People of Iowa decided to unretain three of the Supreme Court Justices who were up for retention.

So today the Kennedys choose to make a mockery of the people of Iowa and our system of government. I find it as left-leaning and pathetic as the whining of these justices after they received their pink slips.

This is why I am so passionate about running for Iowa Senate – I BELIEVE IN OUR RIGHTS, OUR VOICE AND OUR STATE!
